Roasting Chestnuts on a coal fire Pottering in his greenhouse for hours and hours while listening to radio 4 Growing fruit and veg Taking his radio to the beach to annoy everybody by listening to cricket Listening to gardener’s question time – we thought it was BORING! He used to eat a lot of sweets, mainly boiled sweets or licorice He read comics especially Dandy and Beano Enjoyed George Formby, Stanley Holloway, Gilbert and Sullivan Listening to Dylan Thomas poems on cassette Carry on films and Benny Hill Drying our hair after a bath on Sunday nights – rough and playfully Painting the kitchen on Christmas Eve as Mum was trying to prepare a roast His knowledge of facts, in particular historical ones – without ever seeming to read a book. Dozing in an armchair. Mega-sneezes. His dentures flew across the dinner table into the salad once!
